Nutshell Seminar

The Nutshell seminar is the PhD seminar of the mathematics department at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Most talks are by our own PhD candidates about (usually) their research in a nutshell, i.e., at a level understandable by (and hopefully interesting to) a general mathematical audience. Other topics are also welcome, such as sharing experiences from one’s PhD journey.

The audience of the Nutshell consists of our own PhD community. We try to keep the threshold low, welcoming both “stupid” questions and low-level practice talks, with minimal social pressure to impress anyone. Senior staff is generally not invited.

I am the current organiser of the Nutshell seminar (dubbed “Nutshell Monarch” by some). Previous organisers of the Nutshell are Michael Jung (2022–2024) and Aafko Boonstra (2024–2026).

Schedule

Due to the setup of the Nutshell, no titles, speakers or abstracts are announced here. However, I do keep up with an (anonimised) online calendar that you can find at https://jessestraat.nl/Nutshell.ics. You can copy the URL to your favourite calendar app to import it, and get automatic updates on new events.
